Wintergreen Essential Oil: Mother Nature’s Aspirin

Wintergreen Essential Oil with its strong and cooling aroma invokes awareness and concentration as well as having many physical benefits.

Did you know that Wintergreen Essential Oil contains 85-99% of methyl salicylate, which is the same component of aspirin? So, thirty ml of wintergreen oil is equivalent to about 171 adult aspirin tablets or about 60 grams of aspirin.

Birch and wintergreen are the only plants in the world that naturally contain methyl salicylate. It is documented that these oils have cortisone-like effects that can relieve pain quickly. Therefore Birch and wintergreen were always considered the best essential oils for pain in the early 1920s before the synthetics were made.

Today unfortunately Wintergreen is not commonly used because the British School of Aromatherapy advises that is should not be used due to safety concerns. However, the french are still using it and heres why, because it has so many incredible benefits!

It is one of the oils used during A Raindrop Technique where it is applied NEAT (undiluted) to the spine. A fantastic treatment which is now been taught again through with specific training using only the highest threraputic grade essential oils. It is extremely dangerous to use oils that are of poor quality, adulterated, cut and chemically extracted however.

What is the Genus Species? Gaultheria procumbens, this is important because there are many different species of Wintergreen. Even though species may share some similar properties they are not at all the same. And of course they are used for different purposes.

What Part of the Plant is Used? Leaves and bark.

What is the ORAC Value? 101,800 µTE/100g

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It tells you the antioxidant capacity of a food item. Antioxidants have shown to reduce the risk of age related conditions and cancer! This was developed by the USDA researchers. The highest ever ORAC is Clove = 1,078,700. ( which is amazing)!

Native Americans chewed wintergreen when running long distances to increase endurance and respiratory capacity, and it tastes great! It is often used in food flavouring as well. The early American settlers had their children chew the leaves of wintergreen each spring to prevent tooth decay.

What are the Plant Properties? Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, analgesic, disinfectant, anticoagulant, vasodilator and stimulant (bones).

How do I use it?

Use diluted – 20:80 dilution (one part essential oil: four part of vegetable oil). Then,

  • Apply several drops (2-4) on location
  • Apply to chakras/vitaflex points
  • Directly inhale, or
  • Diffuse

Note about Animal Use: Certain oils can be very toxic to cats. Citrus products and oils in particular. Please consult your vet if you are not sure about applying any essential oil to your pet.

What are the Safety Precautions? First, only use therapeutic grade essential oils when wanting healing results! Because it is improved as a Food Additive (FA) by the FDA, food grade wintergreen oil is available on the market. Please remember, these are not the same oils and are often adulterated (changed).

Children younger than 5 years old, women who are pregnant and those who have epilepsy should avoid using wintergreen.

Additionally, because this oil is an anti-coagulant it may increase the effect of pharmaceutical blood thinners.

Some people have reactions to methyl salicylate, the primary ingredient in wintergreen essential oil.

Use wintergreen essential oil to promote the healing of broken bones and fractures! And combat osteoporosis.
